Project Overview

The Railway Measurement Standards Development Building was delivered for the National Institute of Metrology Thailand to strengthen the country’s technical capability in support of its growing rail infrastructure. The purpose-built facility brings together specialist laboratories and advanced engineering systems for the calibration, testing and verification of railway components and technologies. From concrete sleepers and welded rail joints to track alignment, vibration monitoring, signalling and high-speed rail systems, the building provides the controlled environments needed to deliver accurate and reliable measurement.

Scope of Work

    • Structural works
    • Architectural works
    • Electrical and communication systems
    • Air-conditioning system
    • Sanitary system

Project Highlights

        • Delivered a specialist Force Laboratory capable of measuring tensile and compressive forces up to 10 MN, the highest capacity in ASEAN and the second-highest in Asia.
        • Created a 40-metre Long-Distance Measurement Laboratory equipped with a Large-Scale Interferometer for calibrating Total Stations and Electronic Distance Meters.
        • Integrated ASEAN’s only primary Reference Wall, supporting the calibration of Laser Trackers and LiDAR systems.
        • Developed a primary Vibration Laboratory for calibrating seismic instruments and vehicle speed-detection cameras using laser interferometry.
        • Provided an Electromagnetic Laboratory for testing and calibrating satellite, 5G, 6G, communication and drone-related technologies.
        • Installed precision environmental control systems that maintain temperature variation within 0.5°C throughout each laboratory, ensuring stable conditions for accurate testing and calibration.
        • Integrated dedicated mechanical and electrical infrastructure, including chilled-water systems, AHU rooms, fire-pump systems and the main distribution board (MDB) room.

Project Outcome

The completed facility provides the National Institute of Metrology Thailand with a dedicated national centre for developing and maintaining measurement standards for the railway sector. By bringing advanced testing, calibration and verification capabilities into a single purpose-built environment, the project supports greater safety, reliability and consistency across the design, construction, operation and maintenance of Thailand’s rail infrastructure. The building also strengthens Thailand’s readiness for future urban and high-speed rail development, while helping to reduce dependence on overseas testing and calibration services.
